Why Does Engine Coolant Keep Disappearing?

posted on
The engine coolant in your vehicle, also known as antifreeze, is a particular fluid that runs through your engine to keep it within its correct operating temperature. It is usually green, blue, or even pink in color. Like your engine oil, its primary functions are transferring heat and protecting crucial engine components. Modern vehicles are designed to last up to 10 years or up to 200,000 miles before adding new coolant.  Engine Coolant Image

Your vehicle's coolant is critical in how well your engine runs and should be checked regularly. If your engine coolant keeps disappearing, then that can pose a real threat to an engine. Low levels of coolant can cause the engine to sustain substantial internal damage. Here are some reasons why your engine coolant keeps disappearing.

Coolant Leaking

A coolant leak can be identified by a visible fluid on the floor wherever you park your car. Coolant can begin leaking for many reasons, including a hole in the radiator, a leaking radiator cap, or a blown head gasket.

Overfilled Reservoir

The reservoir has a label that indicates the maximum amount of fluid to be replaced. Always add only the required amount for your system. When the reservoir is overfilled, this can cause hot coolant leak throughout your engine bay, leading to severe damage to wiring and electrical components.

Radiator Cap

The radiator cap should seal the liquid inside and ensure its expansion doesn't lead to any leak. If the radiator cap is loose or broken, it can lead to an overflowing reservoir and mysteriously disappearing engine coolant.

Blown Head Gasket

One of the earlier symptoms of a blown head gasket will be disappearing coolant. A blown head gasket can allow coolant to leak outside of the engine and cause the coolant level to drop. This will result in major overheating as your vehicle will lose the ability to cool down.
